MDA

Muscular Dystrophy Association

We dedicate ourselves every year to standing on street corners and in intersections, filling the boot, so that children affected with muscular dystrophy and related disorders can receive crucial medical treatment and so that the search for a cure can continue.  Additionally, the money also supports MDA summer camp, medical clinics and provides financial assistance to families to purchase wheelchairs and other equipment. Nationwide the IAFF maintains its spot as the largest national sponsor of the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) after raising a record-shattering $27,530,000 for the MDA in 2008.

Special Olympics

Fire in the Bowl Chili Cook Off

Each year our members participate in the annual Fire in the Bowl Chili Cookoff, sponsored by the Martin County Parks and Recreation Department.  All proceeds from the event  benefit the Special Olympics of Martin County.  This year over $2000 was raised towards helping provide year-round sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities in Martin County.  Teams from stations 16,21,23, and 30 entered the competition with station 23 winning the "People's Choice Award" and station 30 winning in the best "Public Safety" category.

Our Local 2959

The earliest formation of fire unions in the United States came at the turn of the century. Prior to this time, members of the fire departments were wholly dependant to the good will of the municipal officials for salaries, working conditions, and other benefits.  The concept of pensions, insurance and other basic benefits was unheard of.

It was because of these conditions that the birth seed of fire unions was planted.

Martin County Professional Firefighters and Paramedics organized with the International Association of Firefighters as Local 2959 in 1986.

In addition to collective bargaining, our Local actively works on issues that directly affect the jobs, economic security and safety of our members.
